Any advice on how best to remove soot from a combination of candles and a fireplace from a white ceiling (flat paint)?

Not knowing the condition or quality of the paint makes it hard to answer with any certainty. Some fireplace soot contains an oily residue. You can try a solution of 1/2 cup household detergent to one gallon of water. It is recommended that you try a "spot test" before covering a large area to make sure the paint will not be damaged. Make sure to rinse thoroughly when done. Good luck.

Flat paint isn't really cleanable (did I just make up a word?). Your best bet is to use a sealing primer like kilz and then repaint. We don't allow open flames of any kind in our rental units because of this problem.

Soot is frequently removed successfully with a 'dry' sponge. This is a special sponge that works as an eraser to remove soot and soil from nonwashable surfaces like lampshades. These sponges are available at janitorial supplies, hardwares, and home centers.

Thanks for the replies--I tried the soap and water thing, but unless I wash the whole ceiling I'm going to have reverse crop circles over the fireplace. My guess is because the soot is from scented candles there is a lot of oil in the residue so I guess I'd better head to the paint store after Christmas. Yeeha. :)
