I just bought a Rheem RGRK 2 stage furnace. My question is this - the installer said it was his first installation of this model. We only hooked up 2 wires to the thermostat and furnace and I am not totally confident it is correct. Is there any way to actually tell if it is working correctly - by this I mean if it is running on the low stage until more is needed. He told me a control board in the furnace actually determined the need for the higher stage, and it didn't have anything to do with the thermostat. He has since installed another for a neighbor and but a regular thermostat in.

I don't think that is right, but I haven't ever put one in either.

I'll look it up and get back to you sometime today.

Right now I have to DIY my browser.

It will work like it is, but they recommend using a two stage thermostat, which means a minumum of three wires R, W1 (or just W), and W2.

if you buy and electronic stat make sure it is for 2 stage GAS, and not heatpump.

I have a honeywell RTH7400D programmable thermostat that is for multi-stage furnaces.

THen you need to run another wire for W2.. is this heat only?

You will then need to hook that up at the furnace, and then read the install manual on how to tell the board you are using two stage stat.

Make sure you set the stat up for 2 stage heating, and 3 cycles per hour.
