I have a GE gas cooktop that I have to light manually (all 4 burners). The ignitors do not work, nor do they even click when you turn the knobs to light. Any suggestions? Is this a DIY repair or should I call a repairman? Thanks!

Hello Mike. Welcome to my Gas Appliances topic and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

When all of the ignitors fail to work, look for a fuse in or next to the spark module. Not all stoves or cooktops have a fuse but those that do often the appliance fuse is blown or burned out. Module may be burned out.

Be sure there is electrical power to the appliance. Test the switches using a continuity tester, if you have one and are handy using it.

Here is the how to method: First unplug the appliance from the electrical power source. Than remove both wires from each switch, one switch at a time, and do the continuity test.

Objective is to locate the one switch that shows continuity when the switch is in the off position. Once located, replace that switch but do check all switches. More than one defective switch may be found.

Replace the wires at the modual exactly as found prior to the removal of the existing modual. May even be a grounding wiring included. Not all mfg's use the same method. Based upon the brand and type of modual. Same applies to the switches. Must be wired corrctly and exactly as found prior to removal.

In some cases the switches on the burner valves are burned out. Not likely they all are but possible. Lift the lid and inspect the wiring looking for burned wires, etc.
