Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - Ariens 3.5HP 2 stage snow thrower dies when auger is engaged

I have a question for anyone a little more familiar with small engines. I can fix them if I know whats wrong, I just have trouble knowing what to look for.

I have an Ariens 3.5HP 2 stage snow thrower. It runs fine when its idleing, but when I engage the auger the engine will most of the time die. If it doesnt die when I engage, it will die whe I start to throw some snow. It seems like if there is a load on the engine it gives out. What is something I should check that may fix this problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

what brand of engine?

It is a Tecumseh 3.5HP engine with 120v elec start.

It sounds like the carburetor needs a cleaning. Easy job....I think it's not getting enough fuel to meet the demand.

OK....thanks for the input. I have never clened the carb. What is the best way to clean the carb? Do you take it off and soak it in carb cleaner? I have never done this before.

well, when your taking it apart, keep the parts in a container, so not to loose any, if any gaskets look torn or ragged, or tear when you take it apart, go buy a gasket kit. then get some carb cleaner, in a metal can, could be a clean coffee can, etc. carb cleaner doesn't like some plastics. submerge it in carb cleaner, you could buy two or three cans of the stuff that sprays, use just enough to cover it, let it set for a hour or so. come back, and spray it out with carb cleaner, with the little straw you get with the can. you'll have to take the carb fully apart.

Depending on the heft of the varnish build-up you may need to use a better soaking agent than spray cleaner (I like NAPA #6401) and only soak for 15-20 minutes. If you post back with your engines' model and spec. numbers I can supply you with the part numbers which you will likely need. And any time you remove something that has a gasket be sure to always replace the gasket.
