Hi folks. I need to re-lay carpet in a basement room (it flooded, ergh). Am wondering just how difficult this is, never done it before.
Here is the scenerio. Room isn't huge, ~21x12'. Baseboards installed AFTER carpet, so there is space to slip it back under there (even hung the drywall 1/2" off floor, *just in case* of flood, thank goodness). Tack strips are the classic tacks-straight-up deal, glued down.
I'm wondering, will it need alot of kicking and/or stretching to get it back in place? Or, ssince it's been laid before, will it just go down nice and flat? Something that can be tackled by a newbie and come out okay?

I've done many DIY projects (AKA built the room) but carpet is new to me...

You'll be fine.

Don't clamp the baseboards down on top of the tackstrip. Hopefully the tackstrip is spaced out away from the baseboards ¼", so you don't lock the carpet in.

Just think if you get a little moisture in your basement and you need to quickly pull the carpet up. Your now going to need to pull the baseboards, too. Or you will shred your carpet trying to get it out from under the baseboards with it clamped in.

Thanks.
Maybe I should have been more clear. This has already been installed before, I just had to pull it up b/c of some minor flooding.
When I set up everything before, I had then install the carpet before I put on the baseboards, already planning that I *might* have to deal w/ this... and so, yes, I also made sure they left just enough space w/ teh tack strips that I could pull it out etc - so the strips sit maybe 1/2" out from the baseboards.

To be more direct, my question was (is), since thsi carpet has already been installed once, stretched etc, can I assume it'll just tuck right up and under there? Do I even need to use a kicker? Never used one before.

Yes it will need to be restretched. If you laid it back out you would see it's short or net to the walls. Carpet doesn't hold a stretch once it's pulled up. Depending on if any pad or strip needs to be replaced, I would personally call a couple shops and at least get prices for restretching the room. I don't know what the price of renting equipment is, but I wouldn't expect a straight restretch of that size room being more than $150-$200. So having someone come in and do it might be close or less than renting the tools.

How is the carpet being stored for the time being?
