Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - HELP ID 5hp Tecumseh for carb replacement

I have almost 30 year old Ariens blower 922020 with 5hp Tecumseh. A few years back - I had the carb professional cleaned and rebuilt - due to it leak
and NO idle issues. (jet clogged) Anyway - I have the same problem - but
NOW - I can not locate the manual - or any engine numbers. I was trying to
find a NEW or rebuilt carb that would fit the 5hp Tecumseh - with a BOWL drain
like I have seen on the newer units. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I figured - IF I can find a replacement carb - then I can take my time to
try to rebuild the old one again. ANd the bowl drain feature would be nice!

You shouldn't have to replace the carburetor. If this is a 4-stroke engine the Tecumseh part numbers are as follows: Rebuild kit - 31840; Float - 632019; Drain-type bowl - 631951; Manual - 740049. If, in fact, you do want to buy a new carburetor then it will be very difficult since you have no engine ID numbers. I'd be surprised if they weren't there...probably just rusted over as they're usually stamped into the blower housing in the vicinity of the spark plug OR on a tag riveted to the housing below the carburetor. If near the spark plug AND you have an electric start model, you may have to remove the starter button box to find them.

Almost 30 years old, 922020. From 1975 tp 1976 the 922020 had a Tec HS50-67008A. From '76 to '78 a HS50- 67008B was used. They both used a 631914 carb. The carb is NLA so you would have to use a 631953 "service carb".
The service carb requires the reuse of some of the old carb components. A VERY good cleaning may get you running.

I want to have a back up carb . . the one in there now was rebuilt once.
I waited too long to fire it up this year - we already had over a foot of snow.
What I was looking for is one I could just slap on and go. :( And then
re-rebuild the original as time permits. Maybe I'll hunt for one to rebuilt
on ebay ???

I can just "SEE" the last two numbers on the head cowel. The electric start
switch is covering the rest of the numbers and there is NO WAY I can get those
screws out - well - maybe I'll try running it HOT for a while and see if I can
break them loose.

Don't be concerned about breaking the button box screws. You can always drill new holes in the shroud and remount a hair over from where it was and the Tecumseh screw part number for them is 650819.

i have a 1996 5hp tecumseh i found a carb at jacks small engine it has no adjustments it is a new emission carb.shoot me a picture of the carb.i also have the manual for tecumseh engines if that will help you.its snowing again in michigan.

I would like to replace my current tecumseh carb and then - when I have more
time - rebuild the old one. I have an HS50 engine - from about 1975.

NOW - so far I have talked to 3 local shops - all suggested I just get the
31840 rebuild kit - before I spend $70 on a carb. Seems like it don't
matter which carb I have - 31840 fits them all ???

Well then - I have been given 3 different posible carb numbers as replacement

631914 - which is replaced buy a SERVICE kit carb 631953

OR Carburetor, HS50 - Tecumseh 631923 OR maybe 631824

i replaced my carb with the 640084B,that replaced the old one that was on the blower when i bought it,that no.is 632107A.it works great on my 5 hp tecumseh.use this web site www.jackssmallengines.com.he fixed me up with a new carb.it cost me a total of 58.98 and it came in two days and i bolted it on and it works fine.its a new emmisions free carb,no adjustments.

Being a 30 year old unit and being a 5 horse you likely have a H-series Tecumseh, not an HS-series. With that in mind and the fact I looked up four different H-series models at or about the age of yours, the computer comes up with the same for all four...631067A, which supercedes to a 631828 and lists for around $75. I'll bet this is the one you'll need. All the other carburetor numbers the other have listed are for the HS-series and I'm pretty confident you don't have this series engine. By the way, looks are deceiving when it comes to carbs...passageways, jetting, mounting, throttle shaft, choke shaft, etc.

The very first post states that the model number of the machine is 922020. That makes the machine part of the 22000 series. This is the smaller (approx. 20") unit. They use the small frame Tecumsehs, HS40 - HS60. See earlier post. The info comes from an Ariens Repair Manual.

folks - I found the first parts of the id info in the HEAD area of the unit.
Most definitly a HS-50 - but then the electric start switch covers most
of the rest of the nubmers - except for a B or D and the other end.

So far - It has been indicated that the orginal carb was a 631914 witch
is NLA - but a SERVICE carb can be used 631953 - but that defeats my
quick switch bolt on in less than an hour concept.

Depending of which local Ariens local shop I took a photo to with the
92202 numbers - they tell be that a 631 581 - or 701
Another local shop had a 631 923 and 824 - which looked pretty
close - excpet for the choke linkage.

For now - I installed a FUEL shut off valve for $4.98 !!! Takes care
of the very slow leak - drips etc.

It still runs great under load - just will not idle if the shoot cloggs.

Guess - maybe I'll pick up another 31840 rebuild kit plus intake gasket
and pray for a warm snap. I just hate to let this unit die . .

Clean off the top of the carb their will be numbers on the flat spot post them I should be able to get you the carb number.

I took the switch off and can not get rest of number, its all rusted and the paint is gone. Local dealer told me its a 67008a or b, and carb parts are the same.

Mine was not getting fuel, I was told to clean the carb, I found liquid in the float, so I tried rebuilding the carb, but now the carb leaks fuel out the bowl gasket.:wall: I set the float to the correct setting. I'd like to advoid buying a new carb. Any ideas what I missed or did wrong? Thank you.

If you didn't replace the float you need to.

Opps I forgot to mention, but yes I put in new float (part 632019) and repair kit (part 31840). I guess I'll take it all back apart and check the float again. :wall:

i had the same problem after 3 attempts i found that the needle seat was not seating and also i had to clean out the welch plug ofices and make sure the needle valve seat is down all the way and you put the indented end of the seat in first thats the side with the little ring.give it the air preaaure test.

I'll check the valve seat, I thought I put the indented (side with the ring) in towards the carb, but I'll check that and make sure it is in all the way. I cleaned those welch plug jets.

First time I did a new needle and seat I didnt seat the seat in all the way and had the same problem of leaking fuel. Make sure that thing is as far down as it can go. Second make sure the float is adjusted to 9/32" above the carb body(Or whatever your spec is supposed to be)

We are trying to install the same Tecumseh replacement carb# 640084B and forgot to note the spring and linkage attachments. Can you help us hook up the carb with the right holes for the linkage and spring? Bigred67
