I am wanting to carpet my stairs to the basement. However, I was told that in order to this I would need three stringers for the stairs. I currently only have two stringers. Is it required to have three stringers for carpet installation on stairs.

Two is fine if they are structurally sound

Thanks. I assume you mean by structurally sound that the stringers are in good shape and the stairs are solid? I did put some cross pieces to the ground and then up to the stairs so as they would not shake. Had nothing to do with soundness.
