We have a 10 year old Admiral Gas Dryer that is leaving a black coating on the door, lint trap, and now seems to be transferring to the clothes. Can anyone answer what may be the cause? It is venting properly and doesn't have a "burnt" smell to it. Help!

Hello w. swanson. Welcome to my Gas Appliances topic and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

A:
Chances are there is excessive lint inside the cabinet and burner compartment of the machine. The lint gets stirred up when the dryer is on and burned in the burner shroud and blowen throught the machine. Has to be cleaned out to prevent the sooty stuff and extreme fire hazard.

B:
The problem description may or also indicates the burner is not correctly burning and or fully burning the gas. Regardless of whichever fuel is used, propane or natural gas, does not matter. Soot and carbon is being created.

Carbon and or soot is being created by either a lack of primary air into the burner air intake or the burner flames are too large. The burner flame must be all blue in color and not touching the outer surrounding hood or shield.

C:
If the burner area inside the cabinet is excessively linted, the burner flames will be yellowed. Cleaning out the entire interior may solve the problem.

Be sure to clean out the area around where the burner meets the gas valve. At that location will be a shutter on the burner tube or there may be any means where air can enter the burner tube. This area must be free of all lint, dust, etc.

D:
If the burner flames are not pointed directly towards the center back of the surrounding hood, shielding and or shroud, there is the possibility the venting system is restricted.

Check the entire venting system. This also includes the exhaust vent hood outside. It has a flapper that may not be opening fully or not at all. Locate any restriction within the entire exhaust system and clean out all lint. Replace exhaust vent tubing as needed.

Restricted Exhaust Vent:
The vent tube is located behind or to the side of the dryer. It needs to be removed totally from both sides to completely clear out the lint. Check the entire system. This also includes the exhaust vent hood outside. It has a flapper that may not be opening fully or not at all. Locate any restriction within the entire exhaust system and clean out all lint. Replace exhaust vent tubing as needed.

E:
If the burner flames are too large and appear to totally or nearly fill the entire burner shroud, surrounding hood or shield, there is always the possiblity the burner flames are too large.

Excessively large flames indicate an overgassed condition. If this is the problem and or situation, professional service is required. Contact the gas supplier first. Many offer free or low cost services to gas appliances.

Additional Suggestions:
Read the manufacturers online web site for product information, problem possibilities, causes, solving methods, part locations, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair procedures, pictorials, schematics, downloadable repair and or owners manuals which may be available online.

Retail appliance parts dealers can also help determine what the most likely possible problem may be. They will need the make, model and serial numbers. Appliance parts dealers are an excellent source for original replacement parts and problem resolving matters. Dealers are listed in the phone book under appliances.

Be sure the electrical power to the appliance is turned off, before attempting any repairs or services. Always check for gas leaks whenever moving the appliance and/or a service or repair includes any connection of a gas part.
