I bought a used riding mower (brand name not visible) and the blades keep spinning after handle is raised. What is causing this problem?

Most riding mowers have two handles or operating levers. One raises and lowers the deck and another engages/disengages the blades.

I have a Lowes rider and while trying to get the deck adjusted to cut a little higher at the first cutting level, I discoverewd that the handle for the height also controls the blade engagement. When the handle for moving the deck down moves, the belt for the blades also engages.

I have moved this post to Small Engine Forum for answers from our experts.

That would probably be a mower manufactured by MTD. There should be 2 brake pads that contact the top of the blade pulleys when the deck is raised to stop the blades. If these are worn out, the blades will continue to turn.
