I am staying at my mother's place and her hot water temp is way too high. I went down to adjust the temp but I am unable to find a thermostat. Other people in the family have attempted the same thing and have had the same result. The water heater was purchased in the early to mid 90's. Is it possible that there is no thermostat? Can one be installed or is it not worth it to put any money into a water heater that is at least 10 years old.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer......

Never seen one without a thermostat. I am assuming it is electric. Is it possible it has a seoperate one mounted on a wall? Check where the wiring runs from anywhere on the heater. Gas WH usually have the temp control on the main control at the bottom of the heater where you light the pilot. Good luck.
