I have a sort of weird problem with my heat pump...Everything works great...Cool,Heat work fine. The problem I'm having is at night (seems to be only at night, when its gets colder out) well anyway the heat pump will kick on..but will never shut off..it just keeps running past the stat setting. It will also not respond to any stat changes.

If I place the stat to the off setting to try and stop it..it still keeps running...The only way I can get it to stop is by killing the ckt breaker.

Any idea of what the cause would be?

your thermo is out of calibration or the thermo has lost its mind.by the way when you kill the breaker is it for the air handler or the heatpump? check to make sure that your wiring to the heat pump haven't been ripped up by the landscaping guys, if any. also tell us what type of system you have , make, model, etc so we can fig. this out.

The same thing is happening with my heat pump. It runs non-stop even though the thermostat is switched to off. The unit that is in my attic does not run while the thermostat is off, so no air is blowing through the vents. This makes me think that it is just a problem with the outdoor unit. I shut off the unit using the outside switch and plan to run my heat tonight on the Emergency heat setting. I have a Carrier that is 18 years old.

I too have had the same problem as well as my backyard neighbor. When we each found out and started talking about it, we found that when we had our units installed years ago that neither of us had replaced the thermostat wire from the heat pump. I ran a new wire from the unit to the thermstat in the house and it resolved my problem. My neighbor then did the same thing and it fixed the problem too. Hope this info helps you
