I have a Trane heat pump manufactured in 1998 and was installed in September 1999. The system works like a champ last summer. No problem with air conditioning. I tried to use heat last week when it got cold. I initialy set the thermostat to 75 degrees. Hot air came out of the vent for the first hour. However, I noticed the air coming out of the supply vent is not as hot and the fan and the compressor continuously run for hours. The temperature showing on the thermostat never got up to 69 degrees. I shut the system down and tried it again the next day with the same results. I had the HVAC tech come out. He checked the compressor freon charge, the air temperature from supply vent which read 71 degrees on a 75 degree stat setting. He advised to keep the system run for over two hours and he will come back to check it out. He came back after two hours. By that time the air temperature from the supply vent is 69 degrees and the large copper tubing from the compressor is not as hot. He tried to charge compressor with more freon but was unsuccessful. He then told me that the compressor is bad and needs to be replaced. Do you agree with the technicians diagnosis?

I made arrangement for another technician to check it out. I need a second opinion before I invest in a new compressor.
