we plan on replacing a peninsula of cabinets with an island. It obviously will not cover the same area. my question is: Do I need to remove the hardwood floor where the island will be and attach it to the subfloor, like the current peninsula, or can it be attached directly to hardwood floor itself?? Also any suggestions on how to match hardwood floors???? (there isn't any usable floor hiding in closets).

You can attach it to the hardwood with L-brackets on the inside. But you probably don't really need to attach it...unless of course you have appliances or plumbing inside the island.
Make sure that the island is the same height as the other countertop. If the other is on the subfloor and the island is on top of the hardwood, there will be a noticeable difference in height.
