I recently had a brand new, split system heat pump installed in my home during this past summer. During the summer months, the unit performed well. Now that the weather is becoming alot colder (I live in the northeast), I've noticed an unusual sound coming from the outside unit at startup. When the unit kicks on, there is a loud panging sound emanating from the lines. It is a sporadic panging sound, which diminishes as time goes on...about 5 or 10 minutes. Is this sound normal? Is it caused by the fluid in the lines warming up? Is this normal? Any help is appreciated!

Your new heat pump should not be any different as far as noise in the heating mode as the AC mode. Your sympton about a panging noise at startup may be a refrigerant charge issue. I would definitely call your installer and get him out for a look. Let us know what you find.
Good LucK!
