i have an old motorcycle with a 6-volt system. i want to find out if my battery is bad or if my generator is not charging. someone told me to hook up a volt meter to the battery with the bike off, and it should read right around 6 volts if charged. then, fire up the bike, rev the engine so that the generator comes on and test again -- should read 6.5 to 7 volts. THE REAL QUESTION IS, WHAT KIND OF VOLT METER DO I GET? i was in Lowes today looking at the volt meters, but i do not know what the heck i was looking at. thanks for input.

Almost any VOM(volt/ohm meter) will read DC volts. I personally like the digital ones best.
