The motor on my Amana LWA30AW washing machine overheats (smokes and gets very hot) and shuts off when it gets to the point where it is about to drain water and spin after the wash cycle and rinse cycle. I just replaced the belt and the pump so they are not the problem. The motor runs fine for the agitation cycle.

Could be your tranny binding up & making the motor work harder & overheat.
Or could be your motor going bad. Try taking the belt off & running in spin cycle for the whole time period. If motor seems ok I would suspect the tranny. Some washers motor goes in one direction for agitation & reverse for spin. If washer has some years on it I would be looking at a new one compared to replacing a transmission. Dave
