I really am in a pickle, second guessing myself. I have a 2 x 10 board for mounting over my window, want to place a valance treatment on the 2 inch edge of it after hanging the ripplefold draperies on the underneath of it. Should the board be a 2 x 8 or a 2 x 6 instead, and how much clearance should there be between the stacked back draperies and the valance, for a pleasing appearance and easy motion? Many thanks in advance ...

not sure i understand any of your question!

by 2x10 do you mean 2" thick? or 2 feet wide? by 10" tall???

install your draperies first. once installed, simply measure out how much projection & clearance you need for the cornice, and how wide the cornice needs to be to cover the rod. i'd just allow maybe 1/2" clearance in between the draperies & cornice. to make sure the top of the drapery is well-hidden, have someone hold the board and stand back to see how low you need the board to be. i'd guess the bottom edge of the board should overlap the top of the drapery by at least 3" or so.

not sure what this means: "a valance treatment on the 2 inch edge of it"

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I see that now...
What I meant was that I planned to have a 2 inch by 10 inch board sitting on top of brackets above the window,at a right angle to the wall. The drapery rod would be attached to the underneath of this board, and the fabric valance would be velcroed to the 2 inch thickness of the board so that it would hang in front of the draperies. My concern now is where is the best place to install the rod, how far from the front of the board so that the fabric valance will hang in front of it in a pleasing and efficient way. I am second guessing myself that I got a board that was too wide, maybe should have been a 2 inch by 6 inch or a 2 inch by 8 inch because maybe the draperies would be hanging too far from the wall on the board that I've got.
I hope I've done a better job of explaining the situation this time. Thanks very much!

sorry, still confused!

a 2" thick board that's 10" wide (tall) by HOW LONG? sticking out perpendicular from the wall? or parallel?

why aren't you just using a regular curtain rod with regular extension brackets?

what kind of valance is this that you can't just put a rod pocket into the top of it & sheer it onto a rod?

so far, what you're doing isn't a cornice board at all. it's making your own brackets out of wood. and if you're just wanting a valance to hang over drapery panels, you only need to extend out about 6" at the most.

I think a 2 x 10 (or 1 x 10 for that matter) is too big, unless you plan on having sheers or blinds underneath. A good rule is 2 1/2" between layers if they'll be opening and closing. So I would use a 1 x 8 or you could rip it down to a 1 x 7. If they're going to be stationary, then a 1 x 6 would do. A 2 x _ is not normally used for window treatments. You only need a 1 x _ board. You could either velcro the valance on the small edge, or if it's pleated or shirred, you can staple behind pleats or buried in the gathers, so the staples are hidden. Hope this helps.
