I was rudely awoken by the sound of my cantilevered TV stand breaking under the weight of my 6 yr old 170lb CRT 36" Toshiba. It did fall on carpet, but I can not get a picture, although it will turn on & off. I called Toshiba & I was told to unplug it, wait 3 min & it might re-set it, which it didn't. Even thought there is no broken glass, the Toshiba's rep diagnosis was a broken picture tube. If that's the case, then the dinosaur is not worth repairing.

When you found the tv was in on its face or corner? Either way whats in side the tube may be broken. If the tube itself was broken there would have been what sounded like an explosion. Check to see if your homeowners insurance will cover this.

Good idea about checking my H/O insurance, but I live in FL, making me reluctant about filing a claim & being cancelled.

It's not the fall that does the damage, but the sudden stop at the end of the fall. If the CRT was broken, you would still have sound if that was all that was wrong. I suspect that the printed circuit board is cracked around the fktback transformer and if not to badly damaged, it can be repaired. Unfortunately, A fall will usually cause the shadow mask inside the CRT to slip and this will mess up the colors and cannot be repaired. This condition is only obvious if you have a picture so you might repair the board and still have a CRT problem. Good Luck!
