I'm trying to help my elderly mother with her sheer pull-string curtains on a double window. The 42-year-old string broke, the new string has been purchased, but how do I actually replace it? If anyone knows the actual procedure, I would very much appreciate your instructions.

you mean a traverse rod? i don't know, but i'd guess if it's just over a double window, it'd be worth your while & money to just buy a new rod. a quick search & i found a center draw traverse 30-48" is $23. a one way draw is only $19. and i'm sure it could be found for even less.
