Hi all,
Okay - the subject line wasn't the best description of what I'm trying to do, so here goes: I have an older wooden table that needs some work on its top. There is a wooden panel in the center of the table. It is covered with what looks like a thin sheet of wood (not more than 1/16", if that). Basically it seems like a bit of paneling stuck onto the top. My thinking is that I would rip that off, sand it down underneath a bit and then replace it with some other kind of panel (maybe tile, maybe slate), and just affix that new panel to the top and refinish the wood around that panel.
With this admittedly really basic description, is there any advice people could give about a project such as this? Anything that I should take extra special care to make sure of?
If you want more clarification about the table, project, etc. just ask away.
Thanks in advance!

It sounds to me like you are talking about replacing a wood veneer on a table surface
The panel part confuses me though, it's not the table top itself?
It's a panel on top of the table...frame? or it's a removable part of the table top?

Hi, thanks for the response. i think panel might've been the wrong word to use. Maybe inlay is better. It is a thin veneer that is inlaid into the center of the table.

Ahhhh...
Where some tables may have tile for example?

exactly. this table is 27x27 and the inlay is 19x19. so i was just going to pry off that inlay and try to put something else down.

Thanks anyway -- I just pulled out the entire panel. I took the veneer off and there was basically particleboard underneath it. It was in pretty bad shape, so I just decided to get rid of that panel. Now I'll just have to figure out how to get a new panel in there without taking apart the entire thing.

That's too bad
I hope you can put a new one in there
