Hey guys, I'm starting a project for school and I got to choose anything I wanted. So I decided to build a go-kart. I had a couple questions about building it though. If I used an 80cc dirtbike motor for the engine how fast do you think the kart would go and do you think that it would work using that type of engine. And if not what engine do you suggest using and have it minimize cost because I'm only a high school student. Any ideas, tips, or comments would be greatly appreciated thanks a lot

5hp briggs and stratton. The 80cc is a shifter engine... I know from shifterkarts what a pain they are to maintain. You have to deal with clutch linkage and shift linkage, start simple, go for a 5hp briggs and stratton.

Thanks a lot how fast do you think that that will go?

A stock briggs revs to 3600 (about 37-3800 with no governer)
It depends on your gear ration and tire size... the gear ratio will determine the wheel rpm, and from there, you need to figure out the circumfrence of your wheels. Its kinda complicated. IF you can tell me those two things, I can tell you about how fast it will go.

Probably 20-25 mph... at most, but its still seems alot faster when your only like 2 feet up. boardwalk go karts only do like 15.
www.kartworld.com has all the parts you will need. Ive ordered a few things from them, no problems. Azusa Engineering makes decent components for fun karts and minibikes.

I found on some web site to calculate with sprocket size and so forth.
example -
Enter the outside Diameter of the Drive Wheel: - 12 inches
Enter the engine/clutch sprocket size (# of teethA) size (# of teeth) -12 teeth
Drive sprocket (teeth) -57 teeth
Maixuim engine rpm., 3600
top speed 27 mph
Does not factor in weight.
But a decent program to go buy

You can figure it out in about a minute doing basic math

pardon me but I'd go with the dirtbike motor. I love shifting
