Can someone please explain the difference between regular size tack strips and extra large size tack strips and when and where the extra large size tack strips should be used. I am going through a carpet installation nightmare and the guys who installed used extra alrge tack strips and on my stairs the nails are coming through and the backing on my new carpet is pretty darn thick.
thanks

There are many different types of tackstrip.
In widths, you have regular, extra wide, tri-tack, architectural, commercial and aluminum.
then you have pin length sizing...
C-pin is the most common carried by the local distributors, here. it has 1/4" pin height.
E-pin has a lottle shorter pins @ 7/32"
D-pin has 3/16" pins and should be used on short pile carpets to avoid pins showing and poking through the face. Usually special order from the distributors.
J-pin has 5/32" pins and is used with very thin woven carpets. Usually special order from the distributors
If old carpet was taken up and new installed, they most likely used the existing tackstrips that were already there.

They old tack strips were removed as it looks as if the previous owners installed the carpet themselves and a alot were cracked so all tack strips were removed and extra large strips were put down and now nails are coming through my steps. I got the carpet through home depot and they sub contract out the installation and the gentleman though hard workers and very polite were foreign and very hard to understand when we woulds ask a questions we would literally have to ask them to repeat their answer 3-4 time to fully understand what they were saying. I had shag carpeting put down and there is a horrible ovious seam (void) as well as the nails come through the tack strips on our stairs and some bucking in the corners. total nightmare situation. have an inspector coming out on wendesday to inspect their work.

If you call the dealer the installers will more than likely make it right. Most installers are pretty decent about handling their call backs in a timely manner.

If they don't have enough carpet to fix it, they owe you a new carpet.
