Gotcha

I live in a 100 year old bungalow style house that has the brick support columns on the porch. Bees have taken up residence in one of the columns and I'm trying to find out how the column is built, what the interior is like, so that I can better figure out a way to get rid of the bees.
These columns are about 5' tall with a cement cap and then a square, tapered wooden post on top. The bees are entering the brick column via a hole in the mortar at the level of the porch floor.
What I need to know is whether or not these column are just one big hollow space or if there might internal support structures that might interfere with chemicals poured into the top of the column from reaching all the way to the ground. Also, is there usually some type of opening in those cement caps or are they solid?
Any info. would be appreciated!
