Hello everyone! I have a problem with Hot water getting cold after about 5 minutes..... It is a Richmond Brand, Dual Elements, 40 gallon, 4500 watt...I have yet to try anything, wanted to get advice first.....Based on other forums i understand that could be a couple of different problems. Would you suggest starting with lower elment and go from there? Have not ohmed out as of yet to see if element is bad, i have a new element and reads about 14 ohms, is this what should be read on elements already installed?

Yes, check that lower element and thermostat. The resistance may vary some from the new element.

You didn't say how old the water heater was. If it is an older model and the electrical checks are okay, try the dip tube. It is located in the hole that the cold water supply pipe goes to. It just sits in the hole and can be pulled out by sticking your finger into it and lifting. It is usually a plastic tube and it sends the cold water to the bottom of the heater which pushes the hot water out. They sometimes deteriorate. They do sell replacements. Good luck.
