What is the best way to add a simple wood mantel to a rock fireplace wall?

Can an experienced mason notch out the rock, and lay one in? How does that work? Thanks!

Ben

(Wishing the builder would have put the damn mantel on before the rock wall went up!) :)

I'm thinking of the same thing - in my case the house was built 50 some years ago w/ no mantle. The fireplace had an ugly screen when we bought it, I removed it and am thinking of doing something else. If I do a mantle, I'll scribe along the rock and cut out the wood (at least that's what I'm thinking). Pictures of my wall/fireplace can be viewed at: http://bclasen-house.buzznet.com/user/
