My wife just decided to move furniture by herself. Made a 8" x 6" hole in the drywall with sofa. Never patched anything this large. What is the protocol? No studs in the hole area. Need suggestions?

Two choices:
1 There are mesh patches you put over the hole and then mud.
2 Attach 1x2" boards through the edge of the good rock to overlap the hole to create a surface to which you can attach a piece of rock fitted to the hole, then mud.
I like option 2 because I think it leaves a flatter wall in the end.
