I have an insert in my fire place which disributes warm air throughout the house. My question is, the flue from the insert isn't an exact match to original flute. Is this a problem waiting to happen?? Should I worry about this?? I seem to do well building and keeping a fire.
Also, I am unable to have my chimney inspected/cleaned right now and it hasn't been for three years now. I have used it occasionally with no problems. Is dropping a heavy chain and bagging it around a temporary /workable solution?

The flue is the most important element in a fireplace system.

If there is a gap between flues, that is an open invitation to collection of creosote and a possible future destructive fire. Being able to build and keep a fire has no bearing on this problem.

Discontinue use of the fireplace until you know what you have. The more you use it, the worse the potential problem becomes. You could just be waiting for a problem to happen.
