Replaced a Moen shower faucet with a Kohler one and the Kohler faucet protrudes from the wall too far and won't allow installation of the handle. It appears that the Kohler valve needs to be recessed 3" and a stud is only 3 1/2". The original valve was inside of the stud.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this?
