Folks, the electrician cut a bunch of irregulary shaped small and large holes thru the drywall while running his wires. I'm thinking about, instead of trying to put 5 or 6 patches on the wall, cutting out a section that will reach from stud to stud and replacing a big rectangular piece instead of trying to patchwork the thing back together. Anyone agree/disagree or have a better idea? Thanks for any replies.

Keep in mind I'm not there to look at it but I believe you are just making more work for yourself. IMO it would be easier and just as good to tape all the holes and as you finish them extend the mud out so the finished product is one long patch.

Thank you, Mark.
I'm not quite sure how to go about it. I have a total length of about 37" worth of small cut-outs that make one long continuos gash in the wall, from about 2-5" wide. There's only one place (aside from under the new wall switch box) where a stud is available that I can use to secure some of the drywall-the rest are empty gaps between studs. And of course, some of the cut out pieces have crumbled around the edges enough to where the piece barely touches the edges in the hole. Is there a way to secure the pieces that don't have anything behind them I can use for attaching them?

Didn't realize the holes where that big. It may be better to replace the rock as you were intending. It is possible to screw a piece of wood behind the patch by inserting it and screwwing each end to the original sheetrock and then attaching the patch to it. Also on holes too big to tape but too small to replace you can cut a piece of rock bigger than the hole and then on the back side remove all the excess rock - the paper face then becomes the tape and is mudded in place securing the patch.
Hope this helps :)
