My lamp post has a wiring problem. How can I determine where the problem is and if I have to rewire it, how do I go about it?

It would help if you provided the symptoms of this problem.
First, check for a tripped GFCI. Most post lights are GFCI protected (usually by a GFCI receptacle in the house where the cable leaves the house). If there is a photo-cell involved, you might try replacing it. Of course you should turn the breaker off and back on again. And replace the light bulb.
The solution to most problems is divide and conquer. A simple $2 neon circuit tester will do the trick. Remove the bulb and test between the socket shell and the button on the bottom of the fixture. If nothing, remove the fixture and test between the two wires feeding it. If nothing, find where the cable leaves the house and test the wires there.
