I have a pull chain incandescent socket in my attic near the entry hatch. It has a receptable (to plug in something). I don't know what you call it. Can I plug another lamp into it, a shop light or something like it?

Can I remove this receptacle and run wire to the center of the attic and add a switched light fixture, the switch being where the old socket currently is.

Thanks.

Great. What would be the correct wire to run to the new fixture?

If NM cable is allowed in your city, then if the circuit is protected by a 15-amp breaker, use 14/2 NM-B. If the circuit is protected by a 20-amp breaker, use 12/2 NM-B. Read two books on home wiring before beginning.
