We have made a family room out of our back patio. There is still an exterior light on the wall. I want to remove it and put a metal plate to cover the hole so I can hang a picture. I went to Home Depot and at the suggestion of the sales person, bought wire nuts and the plate. After I turn off the electricity(of course!) and remove the light, what do I do with the wires besides just stuffing them into the hole? Do I just put a wire nut on each individual wire? And turn the electricity back on?

Cap each wire securely and individual before you cover the hole with the plate.

Is there a box behind this light? If not you need one to put the wires into and install the blank cover.
