When I light a fire the smoke seeps out the top between the brick and the firescreen. What do I use to seal gaps between the two?

The smoke should be going out the chimney. You may have a well sealed house that would require cracking a window a bit to allow air to take the smoke up instead of back out into the room. Also, are there any ceiling fans running in the room that are set to pull air up (normally summer use) instead of pushing air down? This also can be a problem. Good luck.

They make a fireproof caulk for fireplaces. My point was that there should be no smoke coming out into the house. It should all be going out the chimney.

majak, I burned a fire for the first time in this firplace tonight. I added some paper, cardboard and any paper things I wanted to get rid of. I noticed my house started to get smokey. Should I avoid burning these things to cut down on smoke?
Also, how do I keep a roring fire going and is it safe to do so?? sorry for the dumb questions I never had a fireplace :o .
