I have a fireplace that was converted from wood to gas. We had it cleaned last year. Now when we use it, a strong smell of gas permeates the house. I called a Hearth place and they said I need an outside air kit because I have a negative pressure issue because the house is too tight. But I already have an outside air kit (I translate that to mean a vent to the outside). So now they are saying there may be nothing they can do which I don't accept. Any suggestions on what else the issue may be?

blurred,
I'm on my 3rd gas fireplace. Never had a problem with smelling gas after I started a fire. Think of it like your gas stove, you don't smell gas while you're cooking, right? This has nothing to do with adding an outside vent. Sounds like you have a leak.
Do you smell gas only when the FP is in use? If so, I would shut it off and have a pro inspect ASAP.
Best of Luck.

I would not buy the "nothing we can do" excuse.
Since you only smell the gas when the unit is in use, it narrows down the possibilities.
Is the whole burner tube igniting? If the whole tube isn't, it's a possible source.
If the burner orfice hood isn't screwed down completely it could cause gas to leak out behind it.
Any of the burner tube fittings could be leaking.
I would call the fire place company back again and be persistant!
