We bought a house built in 1850, and we've been remodeling a room at a time each year. Tearing out plater and lathe, furring the walls straight, running electric and plumbing (if needed), insulating and drywalling.
After ripping out the upstairs, we discovered that our rafters are all cracked where they were notched and set on the wall beams.

We're going to put a 2x6 horizontally under all the rafter ends, jack it up to support the ends of the rafters and screw it in place. We're not sure if we also need to sister the entire length of the rafters, or if we can get away with just sistering up 5-6' to strengthen the ends that are cracked. Will that help, or just add more weight?
Thanks!!
