Hi,
I have a 2-story house with an oil burning furnace and a wood-burning fireplace...the house is old too, built in 1926. I got an estimate on the phone from a Chimney sweeper @ $69 for the oil side and $89 for the wood fireplace side if the chimney. Does this sound inline with what this normally costs to have a Chimney sweeped? How often should a chimney be cleaned?
Thanks - Rob

Chimney cleaning quotes sound reasonable. Inspection, which is recommended, will cost more. Cleaning costs tend to vary depending upon difficulty and from area to area in the country. If in doubt, get additional quotes. If you burn wood fires on the average of two to three times a week, the chimney should be cleaned yearly. Also, if you burn unseasoned wood, it is recommended that the chimney be cleaned twice a year.
Oil burner chimneys should be cleaned annually to remove oil soot. The best time to clean an oil chimney is in the spring after the heating season. The long running periods create oil soot that falls back down into chimney base or on top of burner, restricting air flow and cause carbon monoxide to enter the home.
