:wall: I recently bought a home that I thought had a gas burning fireplace. There are no gas logs, just a gas pipe and log holders that don't light. The gas will light at one end of small pipe. I learned from the inspector it is a wood burning fireplace with a gas lighter. But now I am wondering if this is a safe place to burn logs. there is no other gas in my house which is all electric. Will it be safe if I cut off gas compleltly and are the log holders goodto burn logs? The house is only 6 years old and it appears this is the original install in the fireplace. Please help. I am afraid to burn logs until I know I the log holder is ment for the heat from wood burning logs. Thanksundefinedundefined

It is not uncommon to find a gas line into fireplace for starting wood fires. You will need to call a chimney professional to have the chimney inspected and cleaned before building a fire. The chimney professional can help you with your fears about burning wood with gas starter and if you have the correct type of grate for logs.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate. Since my entire house is electric and the only thing using gas is the fireplace starter, I guess I can simply have the gas shut off. I don't need the starter to keep a wood fire going. It is simply an extra bill for service I don't use.
