is it safe to move a round column just a few inches to get it out of a doorway? how about removing the one and replacing it with two on either side of the door?

Support posts are placed directly in the centre of a footing which has been poured under your concrete slab. These posts and footings are strategically placed to carry the weight of your house.

You need to call a structural engineer and get a permit. This is a life safety issue, so don't try to cheap out.

that even moving it a few inches may cause the beam to be overstressed. By moving the post you are making one portion of the span longer. If there is a concentrated load directly above the post and you move it the load may now be on the beam and cause it to be over stressed
