My home is 6+ years old, above the garage there are cracks in the bricks and morter for probably 5-8 feet. Some of the gaps in the morter are 1 inch in diameter

What is causing this? Is it foundation, settling or a result of the following: During construction a decorative brick stone was placed above the garage but because it is a three car garage the placement of the stone was not symetrical and I ask to have the stone removed. As I was checking on the house almost daily I caught this before the brick was probably completely dried. Later someone told me I would have brick problems....would that cause this type of problem?

How do I go about correcting this?

Are you sure you have 1" diameter gaps in the brick? This would indicate that the joint opened up significantly since a mortar joint is normally 3/8". I am assumimg the cracks were in the morar only.

When did the cracks first appear?

Do you have one, two or three doors below the wall that has cracks?

What is the crack pattern and where are the cracks?

Removing a "brick"(?) stone should not have caused a problem if it was caught and replaced quickly in the normal construction process.

At first glance, it does not sound like a foundation problem, but the crack pattern and location could change that. A more likely cause would be insufficenet support for the brick over the opening(s). More information would help to understand the problem.
