Why after a few years would this happen? I wanted to change direction of air flow, after switching it to desired position and turning on the wall switch it now trips the breaker. Any help?

The fan is defective?
The fan switch is defective?
Totally unrelated to fan. Wire came loose? Mouse, squirrel, rat chewed wire? Picture was installed and nail pierced wire?

The reversing switch as probably failed. Usually hot and neutral are attached to that switch, which could explain that.

Thanks for the info guys. Upon checking things out I have no loose, chewed, etc. wires, but did discover that both the fan and light work fine in all ways except for the changing fan speeds in the reverse mode. Thats when the breaker trips. If there is a fix..is it an easy one? Is it safe to use the light as usual-without using the fan in it's bum mode? Thanks again.

You can use the light aline, sure.

Look into replacing the reversing switch (the yellow one)
