Total DIY novice here. We want to rip out the carpet (30+ years old) in our 70's ranch home dining area. Our puppy has soiled it several times and it's so old is fraying at the edges and desperately needs to be gone. BUT, what do we do after it's out?? There's this falling apart rubber padding and it is wood underneath, but I don't know that you'd call it hardwood floor unfortunately. Is it possible to just sand the wood and seal it with something? Groovy barn floor look? Is that crazy? Also, we have no idea what kind of stains we'll find, but I can imagine there will be a lot. We've only been here 3 years, but the carpet looks like it's been here since the house was built.
Anyway, we have no money, so what's the cheapest advice, keeping in mind that we have no idea what we're doing!
Thanks for any wisdom!

I would clean it up good and depending on your budget you can pick up used carpet pretty cheap until you can afford something better, buy new padding. It's pretty cheap.

amy you could do a few things....never buy used carpet..never... not know how big the room is you can buy a cheap commercial rug until you can afford better...commercial carpet will wear longer and make sure you buy new pad//if the carpet was not frayed on the ends or in such bad shape you can replace the pad and clean the rug that will hellp for a while until you can replace the carpet as well hope this helps.....
