I want to leave the ceiling/trusses in my new, soon to be gas heated garage, open for storage reasons. Have insulated the 2X6 walls with r-14 Roxul mineral wool insualtion, and now want to do the roof and the two end truss faces. Have Ventilated soffit and have two roof vents already installed. So whats the best way to go about this? Want to keep as much OPEN storage space as possible. Do not want to close in the ceiling. For info: garage is 24' deep, 26' wide and the center of the trusses are roughly 5.5 feet high, therefor making the two downslopes of the trusses about 14 feet in length.

Thanks in advance,

Doug

Since you have only 2 roof vents, insulating the area between the top truss members would cut off the soffit venting to all the chutes between the joists, except the 2 with vents. - Not a good method.

A continuous ridge vent and 4" of insulation with 2x6 top cords could work. Not likely you have this.

Closing the ceiling would allow a proper functioning insulation/ventilation system with an unheated storage area above the ceiling. This would not give you conditioned storage, but you will have unconditioned storage limited only by the design of your roof trusses.

I hope someone else can come up with a better solution to the puzzle created by the existing limited garage design and your storage area requirements.
