What could the problem be. When flushing the toilet, I have to hold the lever down until everything goes down.

Take the lid off the tank so you can see inside. When you push down on the handle to flush, a stopper (flapper valve) lifts on the bottom of the tank to let water into the bowl. If you push the handle down and let go, does the flapper stay up or go back down?

Going with J.M.C.'s thoughts. Adjust the chain on the flapper to where it "just" allows the flapper to seal. This will help prolong the flushing process.
NOTE: After adjusting the chain, pour a couple cups of black coffee into the tank (liquid only, no grounds). Let it sit a bit and then check the bowl to assure that the flapper is sealing. Coloring in the bowl will tell you the flapper is not sealing so you would have to adjust the chain by one link. If you have a colored toilet....guess you have to dip with a cup to check. Good luck.
