My problem is this is a hous that was built in 1900 and it has a toilet in a bedroom I want to juts take the toilet out but whats the best way to plug the drain so no smells get out. The water is already been cut out and removed its just the flange and stuff left there? I am goign to cover it wtih a solid peice of wood just need to know what I can fill the drain hole with to seal it. thanks guys. To remove the whole drain would be a pain its on 2nd floor and is cast iron.

Don't know if it's the textbook method, but you could stuff some newspapers down a several inches and then fill it in with a small amount of concrete. That would certainly be permanent and block the smell.

I have recommended newspapers and rags for basement drain plugging but I would have to think twice about using these with concrete in a second floor drain. What you need is something that you are POSITIVE will not shift or slide into the main drain. Good luck.

I called my cousin in NY hes a carpenter and a plumber he told me just to get one of those PVC pipe pressure plugs that you put in and turn and it tightens up he said that way its not permanent so if/when i convert the bedroom into a upstairs bathroom everything will be there. Thanks for the help guys!!!
