:thinker: I have an outside floodlight that has a 125 watt bulb. I don't need that much light on the patio. To save on electricity, I'd like to put a smaller bulb in it, say 40 watts or so. It's not the kind of flood light that automatically comes on when it gets dark. It's controlled by an inside wall switch.

Is it okay to install smaller bulbs in such floodlights? Would a much smaller bulb get too hot? I don't want to do something that might cause a short or a fire.

Thanking you in advance . . .

As long as the new bulb is the same shape as the old one, a lower wattage will be just fine.
