I'm wanting to install a door in my garage, that has a cinder block wall. This wall is on the gable end of the home. Do I need to shore up this hole I cut in the wall? And if so what should I use, Steel or wood?

A picture would help you get an answer here but it sure sounds like you need structural support. Ultimately you need to be sure your working safely and not compromising your structure. In most places this is a piece of construction requiring a permit and inspection.

Good luck! :)

You may be able to insert a steel lintel to support the portion of the wall over the opening. Your local code may provide guidance as to the thickness and length of such an item. You may need a building permit, so check with local authority controlling building permits.

Hope this helps.
