I have a mirror that is about 60 years old. It appears to have a film "in it". The film almost looks as if it is in between the glass and the reflective material. Have you ever come across something like this and can it be fixed or cleaned?

the film you refer to is the plating seperating and air and pollution setting in. There is no way to repair this other than replating the nickel backing. Not even museums will do this! sorry!

mirrors are a sheet of glass coated with a reflective material, then plated with metal(usually copper)and finally covered with paint or enamel for protection. In rare instances the mirror has enough decorative or sentimental value to warrant restoration. This is called resilvering, your local full service glass dealer can send it off for $8-20 per square foot.
