Hi, I have a house built in 1926. I believe that the fireplace in it was originally woodburning but was later converted back to gas and intend to go back to wood. While inspecting the chimney I found that the former owners had removed the brick chimney above the roof line. So now that chimney empties into the attic. I was curious about different methods of rebuilding teh chimney. For example, can I put a plate over the chimney with a 6" pipe going through it to act as a chimney? Any ideas would be great.

You will need to contact a chimney professional. The chimney must be inspected for deterioration and to determine if a liner is necessary. The chimney must also meet building codes and a permit will be required.
