I bought a building that already has a gas log fireplace installed. The blower on the bottom was gummed and no longer works, but more importantly, the pilot goes out after a while. I at first thought that since there is no damper in the fireplace that the wind from outside was blowing it out. But I see from other posts here that dampers probably aren't used in gas fireplaces for safety reasons. Is it possible that the wind still is causing the problem?...you can feel breezes through the fireplace. Or, is it probably just the thermocouple? I have removed the blower and probably will replace the thermocouple anyway while I am working on it, but I was wondering if some type of metal baffle would be safe to install so that fumes can still exit the fireplace to the chimney but wind would not be able to directly blow into the fireplace.

There are chimney caps that prevent downdrafts.

The chimney does have a cap, though I am sure there are many different kinds. I don't know how tall the chimney should be and perhaps that is the problem. I would say it is maybe 12 ft.
