We have what I think is called a shed roof over a cement stoop that is about (4'x9'). Right now, two post support the porch roof. We would like to add a third post and a railing. What is the best way to anchor the post to the cement? And for that matter, is toenailing the top of the post to the porch the best way to anchor the top of post? The house is 55 years old. The cement seems pretty sound, but we are still afraid of damaging it when we try to anchor the post. Any advice?

To attach the post base to the concrete, use a Simpsom stand off post base -- they have several and use either a redhead or a couple of drive pin anchors to attach it. Then use a Simpson "BCXX" (depending on the size of post and beam that you are dealing with) at the top of the post. Once you have the hardware in place, cut the post to length and slide it in place. THEN attach the post to the hardware.
